Seismic Noise Autocorrelations on Mars

چکیده
Mars is the first extraterrestrial planet with seismometers (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, SEIS) deployed directly on its surface in framework of Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) mission. The lack strong Marsquakes, however, strengthens need seismic noise studies to additionally constrain Martian structure. autocorrelations single-station recordings permit determination zero-offset reflection response underneath SEIS. We present a new autocorrelation study which employs state-of-the-art approaches determine robust by avoiding bias from aseismic signals are recorded together waves due unfavorable deployment environmental conditions. Data selection segmentation performed data-adaptive manner takes data root-mean-square amplitude variability into account. further use amplitude-unbiased phase cross-correlation work 1.2–8.9 Hz frequency band. main target crustal scale reflections, their robustness convergence. strongest signal appears at 10.6 s, and, if interpreted as P-wave reflection, would correspond discontinuity about 21 km depth. This likely candidate base crust strength, polarity, stability. Additionally we identify, among stable signals, 6.15 s that can be mid-crust 9.5

Impact - generated seismic signals on Mars
Meteorite impacts will be a key seismic source for probing Mars’ interior during the InSight mission. Maximising data exploitation requires a good understanding of impact-generated seismic ground motions (waves), which has been limited by a lack of observational data and the practical difficulty of replicating relevant martian impact conditions in experiments. The aim of this PhD project is to ...
متن کاملSeismic noise emission induced by seismic waves
The in situ rock undergoing different kinds of deformation accumulates elastic energy that can be released spontaneously o r under artificial effect. Triggering of energy can also be performed by means of a dynamic excitation caused by elastic waves. W e carried out special field investigations with the use of seismic vibrators (Vibroseis-like sources) to study the effect of the energy release ...
متن کاملSeismic Noise Trapping in Firn
A comparative analysis was performed on datasets from two Global Seismographic Network (GSN) stations near the South Pole, Antarctica. The results of this analysis are provided and show that there is significant reduction of the background seismic noise generated by the activities at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station as a function of distance and depth. Data gathered from site selection wor...
متن کاملEvent-driven Seismic Interferometry with Ambient Seismic Noise
SUMMARY By cross-correlating recordings of ambient seismic noise, one can retrieve the subsurface reflection response. The quality of the retrieved reflections would depend on the qualities of the ambient noise. In a previous study, we cross-correlated ambient-noise data recorded in a desert area in North Africa and showed that we retrieved reflections. This was done assuming that body-wave noi...
